Welcome to Nant Cwm Sarn

Mrs Rossiter and Miss Hewer

Electric Rainbow

General information

P.E lessons will be on Monday and the children will need to bring black shorts and a white t-shirt. We ask the children to keep their kit in school during half term and it will be returned before February half term. (Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled and in a bag).

We encourage independence in year 1 and therefore expect the children to take responsibility for their belongings. In order to do this please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled.

Homework will be set periodically to reinforce the work presented to the children in class. It is a good way for you as parents to know what your child is doing in school.

Your child will need to return their reading book every Monday morning as we read daily with the children.

This project has a science focus and teaches the children about light, colour and electricity. At the heart of the project children will learn how to write poetry on a theme and develop additional skills in note making and sentence writing in order to remember and describe first hand experiences.

We will be concentrating on the story of The Creatures Carnival and Noah’s Ark .

As part of this project the children will have the opportunity to;

Discuss the dangers of electricity;

Create colourful lanterns;

Experiment with mixing colours;

Learn which light sources are appropriate for which purpose;

Learn why light is important to us and other cultures;

Listen to a variety of stories and poems based on our theme;

Create a light source;

Learn how to write a simple piece of poetry;

Express emotions and feelings through listening to music;

Perform dance routines and listen to ‘Carnival of the Animals’-Saint Saens;

Use light and colour to create patterns, effects and express feelings;

Our theme is Superheroes (theme after half term)

This project has an ICT focus and teaches children how to gather information from a range of sources and use a range of packages to draw, paint, animate and record sounds. At the heart of this project children will write narrative and fantasy stories using a comic and storyboard format and develop additional skills in the use of speech marks and captions.

In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by creating their own superheroes to battle the villain .

In this project the children will learn:

To use ICT to find and present information including film and animation;

To understand the features used by authors and cartoonists in comics and film to describe superheroes;

To identify healthy eating habits;

To read comic strips and dialogue fluently;

To design a comic strip and use it to tell a story;

To use music movement and musical instruments to express the characteristics of fictional characters;

To identify acceptable behaviour and give reasons for your choices;

To identify real life ‘superheroes’ and describe their lives.
