Overview – Spring term 2019

Theme – Robot Rampage (first half term)

 

Physical Education – Swimming for three weeks starting 07/01/2019.

Every Tuesday afternoon following the swimming.

Homework – See homework page.

Reading books – Books will be changed weekly (alternating between English and Welsh books every fortnight).

This project has a design and technology focus and teaches children about a range of different mechanisms and how these can be powered using electricity and other forces. At the heart of this project children write stories about robotic characters set in fantasy worlds. In addition children develop skills to write instructions and autobiographies for a range of fantasy characters and significant historical figures in the world of engineering and science. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by creating their own powered robots to take part in the ‘Young Engineers Fair’.

In this project the children will learn:
About a range of moving mechanisms;
How to use electricity and other forces to power and add features to simple mechanisms;
About the properties of a range of materials;
How to develop fantasy characters and settings;

ow to write narrative stories set in fantasy worlds;
About a range of significant engineers throughout history.


Bones, Blood & Gory Bits (after half term)

This project has a science focus and teaches children about the human body including significant organs such as the heart, brain
and lungs. At the heart of this project children write explanations
to describe biological processes of the human body and develop
additional skills using a range of technical and scientific language.
In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding
by creating a friend for Frankenstein’s monster using a range of
made body parts.

In this project the children will learn:

About the heart, circulation, the pulse and blood;
About major organs of the human body and their functions in keeping us alive and well;
How exercise and a healthy diet keeps the body well and fit;
About the digestive system;
How to write explanation texts using scientific language;
How scientific and medical research has changed over time
How to create 3D forms using wire and other materials;
 How to work collaboratively.
